Guard and shooter killed in attack on US consulate in Saudi Arabia
An attacker and a security officer were killed in a gunfight outside the US consulate in Jeddah, the entry point for the significant Hajj pilgrimage taking place in Makkah, and Saudi officials were looking into the incident on Thursday.
Officials said that the shooter and a Nepalese security guard died after exchanging gunfire outside the embassy on Wednesday night, but provided no explanation for the shooting's likely cause
The Saudi Press Agency cited a police spokeswoman as stating, "A man stopped in a car in front of the consulate building at 6:45 pm (1545 GMT) and got out with a weapon in his hand."
It said that the Nepalese guard eventually passed away from his injuries. According to the report, "Security forces reacted... resulting in an exchange of fire that killed the attacker."
On the penultimate day of the Hajj in adjacent Makkah, the shooting took place. On their way to the ceremonies, more than 1.6 million international pilgrims coming by plane and boat have flooded into Jeddah's coastal area.
The police spokesperson stated that "security investigations are still underway to ascertain the circumstances" of the incident.
The nationality of the shooter is unknown. No Americans were wounded, according to US officials, and the consulate was secured.
The State Department issued a statement in Washington expressing its condolences to the dead local guards member's family and friends.
According to the statement, "the consulate was appropriately locked down and no Americans were hurt during the attack."
As it began its probe, the United States was in contact with the monarchy, the statement continued.
Prior bombings have targeted the US embassy in the Red Sea city, including one on July 4, 2016 -- American Independence Day -- when a suicide bomber detonated himself.
In a suspected extremist attack in December 2004, four gunmen and five foreign employees and contractors working for the consulate were killed.
It was the first assault against a diplomatic post in Saudi Arabia, although it was one of several bombs and shootings that were occurring in the country at the time, according to the Saudi branch of Al-Qaeda.
Jeddah has recently been the centre of US diplomatic action as the US and Saudi Arabia work together to arbitrate between rival generals in Sudan.
When visiting the area earlier this month, Secretary of State Antony Blinken had a meeting with Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
